AbstractIn 2005, the Laboratory of Sociological Research of the municipal office of the social service Shans Center for Social and Psychological Assistance for Young People carried out a sociological survey titled "Current Problems of Today's Young Person," for the purpose of studying the most urgent problems affecting the social development of Tula's youth. The 2005 survey included 250 respondents living in five administrative raions of Tula between the ages of fourteen and thirty. In terms of education: 33.7 percent of the respondents had a higher education; 35.8 percent had an incomplete higher education; 12.3 percent had a secondary education; 11.5 percent had a secondary specialized education; and 5.8 percent had an incomplete secondary education. At the present time, 41.1 percent are going to school; 37.5 percent are working; and 19.4 percent are working and going to school at the same time. Most respondents were unmarried young people and most did not have children. The survey materials make up the empirical base of this article, which examines the aspirations and value orientations of the young people of Tula. Respondents were presented with an array of values and were told to rank each of them in the degree of their importance for a value orientation. An analysis of the survey data provides evidence that the young people of Tula are forming a pragmatic and well-considered attitude toward their choice of life strategies. (Contains 4 tables.)
