| Abstract | Recruitment includes all organizational practices and decisions affecting the number and type of individuals willing to apply for and accept vacant positions (Rynes, 1991). Effective recruitment practices have the potential to improve the quality of educational experience for students, reduce the cost of personnel development, and decrease the turnover rate. In the educational arena, researchers have conducted laboratory experiments and surveys investigating the influence of organizational characteristics and job attributes on the decision making of prospective applicants for teaching positions, the principalship, and the superintendency. These studies are informed, explicitly or implicitly, by the theoretical perspectives associated with job choice theory. In terms of study design, researchers have largely relied on laboratory experiments and surveys to identify factors likely to influence job attraction. The sections presented in this article highlight the shortage of qualified applicants for positions in education and provide an overview of selected empirical recruitment research. (ERIC). |
