AbstractA main responsibility of leaders is helping others develop their leadership skills, and the impending retirement of many principals and assistant principals has also made succession planning a major concern for school districts. Many school systems are fulfilling this responsibility by strategically cultivating up-and-coming administrators to replace the experienced school leaders who are retiring or changing careers. This article describes the Coweta County (Georgia) Leadership Academy which is a successful example of how to train future leaders so that when leadership changes occur, the new leaders and the school system can accomplish a successful transition. The purpose of the leadership academy is to prepare future leaders for all aspects of school leadership at the principal and assistant principal levels and to work proactively to meet the growing shortage of qualified principal and assistant principal candidates. Specifically, the leadership academy has: (1) Prepared teacher leaders to become assistant principals; (2) Prepared assistant principals to become principals; (3) Provided opportunities for leaders to develop the skills needed in leadership roles; (4) Provided opportunities for leaders to disaggregate and analyze student data; and (5) Provided opportunities for leaders to develop collegial relationships.
