Abstract | Physics labwork has for a long time now been an important part of academic physics education. But demands on physics education have changed. However, while seminars and lectures have easily been updated with the latest content, it is much more difficult to modernize labwork courses: mere changes of content require expensive new equipment, tight course schemes do not allow for fundamental structural changes. Thus, physics departments have been reluctant with an essential renovation of labwork courses. Nevertheless, in 2000 the physics department at the University of Dusseldorf decided to have the introductory physics labwork course rebuilt from scratch: as a point of departure, demands of lectures and students have been surveyed. According to these demands a new course with three succeeding parts has been developed: a "Devices"and a "Methods" part, which serve as a preparation for the third part, the "Projects" part, in which students self-determinedly work on small research projects. This paper summarizes the criticism concerning existing labwork courses and describes the surveyed demands as well as the according implementation of the new course. Results of an evaluation of the course with respect to the specified demands are reported briefly at the end. (Contains 3 figures.) (As Provided). |
