Abstract | Lacrosse has been the fastest growing team sport at the interscholastic athletic level for the past 10 years according to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). As a result, many physical educators are branching out from their traditional team sport units and teaching lacrosse in their classrooms. They are exposing students to the fast-paced game that incorporates the footwork of basketball, the tactics of soccer and field hockey, the quick scoring of ice hockey, and its own unique style of fun that has kids across the country clamoring to play. Physical educators may be willing to incorporate the sport into their physical education program, but often feel reluctant because they do not have much knowledge of the game and the skills needed to teach it successfully. Their jobs will now be made easier due to a recent publication, "Physical Education Lacrosse Curriculum," a comprehensive manual for teaching lacrosse in physical education in grades 4 to 12. The guide includes cognitive, psychomotor, and affective objectives that support the national standards for physical education, comprehensive lesson plans, diagrams, illustrations, modified rules, reproducible handouts, and more. Physical educators who conduct lacrosse in their classrooms have found the activity greeted with enthusiasm from their students. (ERIC). |
