| Abstract | All parents face stressors. For parents with resources, the stressors can be minimal. For parents without resources, a most basic stressor can have a "pile-up" effect, and become a crisis situation (McCubbin & Patterson, 1983). For parents with limited resources--or for those whose resources are not available during an emergency--there is help. Many communities around the country have "crisis nurseries." While they may be called many different things--crisis nursery, crisis child care, children's shelters--their purpose is the same. They are designed to prevent child abuse and neglect during times when families are facing extreme stress. In this article, the authors provide an overview of a crisis nursery, its history, and its types. They also enumerate the range of services offered by crisis nurseries as well the benefits they provide for parents and children. Furthermore, the authors compare the differences between a crisis nursery and a child care center. (Contains 4 online resources.) (ERIC). |
