Abstract	This article reports that with world markets shuddering, higher education remains one of the few bright spots in a gloomy global economic landscape, prompting already stiff competition for international students to become even more heated. Leading destination countries like Australia, Britain, Canada, and the United States have all posted recent gains in foreign-student enrollments, but they are also acutely aware that they cannot afford to rest on their laurels. Countries such as China and India that have traditionally sent large numbers of students abroad are rapidly expanding their own higher-education systems, giving more students the option of obtaining a quality education at home. China and South Korea are also transforming themselves from exporters of students to destinations in their own right, as their universities become increasingly competitive and draw international students from within the region.
