AbstractIn the Unitarian tradition, Coming of Age (COA) is the counterpart of confirmations or bar/bat mitzvahs, with much less structure. Unitarians are all about freedom of thought, of belief, of expression, and this young adult rite of passage is an opportunity for each young person to say to the congregation, "This is what I believe." The author notes that when her older daughter, who has special needs, participated in a COA several years ago, her poise and confidence as she shared her thoughts with a sanctuary full of adults were undeniable signs of her own movement into adulthood. It was the recognition of how much her daughter had grown that motivated the author to accept an opportunity to teach a Coming of Age (COA) class in her church. This article describes the author's experience and outcomes of the class as they progressed through the year. (ERIC).
