AbstractThe concept of Educational Ambassadors is embedded within the so-called "Danish model" of industrial relations. The Danish industrial relations system is characterised by strong collective organisations with national coverage, which conclude the collective agreements for various industries or sectors and which are mostly grouped under central "umbrella" organisations. Trade union density is another important factor within this framework; roughly 90% of blue-collar workers and approximately 75% of white-collar employees are unionised. Given this high-level of unionisation within a framework of binding collective agreements, a union's presence at the workplace in the form of workplace branch committees, works councils, shop stewards and safety representatives is visible and tangible. This article examines the background to the establishment of Danish trade union Educational Ambassadors based on two case studies. In the main it is a historical analysis that discusses the strengths and weaknesses of their operation, situates them within the Danish model of industrial relations and shows how this initiative has presently ground to a halt. In turn, comparisons are drawn with British union learning representatives (ULRs). (ERIC).
