AbstractAs a result of the transformation that has taken place in Russia, people there today are living in a different country with a different name, a different political system, a different present and future. For this reason, the problem of identifying with this new "different thing," the foundation of which still, to a considerable extent, consists of the enduring values of the Russian past that characterize the mentality of the people, and the acquisition of a modern identity, is timely and relevant. This article looks at this phenomenon and analyzes what concepts college students in Moscow have about the Russian identity, its basic characteristics. The empirical basis for the analysis was provided by a study by this author in higher educational institutions of Moscow in April through October 2006. The survey covered 128 students in the third and fourth years of study at the Russian University of Friendship of Peoples, the Higher School of Economics State University, and the Academy of Law and Administration. The method used was the questionnaire survey, supplemented by the data from seventeen semistructured interviews with students in order to make the interpretation of the results more precise and thorough. Inasmuch as the survey sample was a limited number of college students in elite institutions of higher learning, the article's conclusions have to be examined in the context of the search for and testing of ideas that relate to this topic.
