Abstract | This study examines the roles other people play in individuals' decisions to enter into teacher education. Elements of social cognitive and situated theoretical approaches to motivation are combined, using a newly developed instrument. Participants were 303 Australian and German teacher education students. They indicated other people who had helped or hindered them in their journey to become teachers. The findings reveal the important role played by immediate family and the significance of personal and emotional support across both national contexts. Strengths and limitations of the methodology and directions for future research are discussed. (Contains 3 figures and 7 tables.) (As Provided). |
