AbstractNearly 10 years ago, the author wrote an essay for "The Chronicle" on the underrepresentation of Asian-Americans in academic leadership, especially in institutions and disciplines that have a high percentage of students and faculty members of Asian or Pacific Island ancestry. There have been changes over the past 10 years, but not so much for Asian-Americans. The author has found that efforts to place more Asian-Americans in college leadership positions have been disappointing. In this article, the author addresses the issue of underrepresentation of Asian-Americans and explains why there are still not enough Asian-American college presidents. He cites examples of unfairness and discrimination against Asian-Americans, in spite of the American democratic ideals. As with national issues of fairness, inclusiveness, and discrimination, the author stresses that it will take continued diligence to maintain gains and move forward. Based on experience, he offers five steps that institutions must take to overcome such difficulties: (1) Identify the problem; (2) Get the community to understand the unfairness; (3) Put processes in place to resolve the problem and ensure fairness in the future; (4) Review and assess the success or areas to improve for the following year; and (5) Improve performance and openly share the data with the community.
