Abstract | Multicultural literature today is characterized by rich language, captivating illustrative techniques, and authentic stories within all genres. Never before have so many possible topics and cultures been available in books to share the diversity of both local and global societies as well as to validate the life experiences of readers. In the setting of New York City that offers a cosmopolitan perspective on literacy and cultural diversity, it was only fitting that this Master Class spotlight the insights of authors and illustrators whose work is focused on creating cultural experiences within contemporary literature and for a new generation of literacy learners. This would enable participants to contemplate how they might significantly use this excellent literature within an instructional context characterized by new literacies, technology, and changing insights into cultural and global issues. In this article, the authors share the insights of Sharon Flake and E. B. Lewis who were invited to speak at the Children's Literature Assembly (CLA) master class. They each spoke to the topic of multicultural writing from their own personal perspective and journey. (ERIC). |
