Abstract | This article reports on Wittenberg University's different approach to reach alumni by sending three young graduates on a 2008 version of the classic college road trip. Armed with air mattresses, laptops, and a video camera, the three young graduates drive cross-country to help the university reconnect with alumni. Over three weeks, they would stop in 17 cities and meet as many graduates of the Springfield, Ohio, university as possible, blogging about their adventure and capturing alumni stories on video to post online. The three travelers, all of whom work for Wittenberg's advancement office, would keep costs low by staying with alumni who volunteered guest bedrooms, couches, or floor space along the way. The road trip was conceived as a way to refresh alumni connections to Wittenberg, build interest in starting alumni clubs in more cities, and make the university's Web site more interactive. It is one example of how colleges are using new tactics to reach alumni beyond traditional campus events like homecoming and reunions or happy hours in cities with alumni clubs. (ERIC). |
