Abstract	The University of California campuses are among a small but growing number of research universities adopting new policies--or reinvigorating old ones--that allow tenure-track and tenured professors to work part time. Typically, professors interested in scaling back their work want more time to care for young children, a sick relative, or an aging parent. They often cut back on teaching but keep their research going. According to a study of family-friendly policies in higher education completed last year by the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, 15 percent of the 189 institutions studied had a formal written policy allowing professors to work part time. Another 10 percent said they expected to add or enhance their part-time policies in the next couple of years. Still other colleges lacked a formal policy but allowed part-time work by making case-by-case arrangements with professors. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology approved a part-time policy for tenured faculty members in 2001, and last year Stanford University specified that professors could work part time temporarily for family reasons. The University of Washington and Ohio State University have had part-time work policies for a decade or more. The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation is urging universities to build more flexibility into faculty careers. Boise State University and Canisius College, two institutions that won grants from the foundation last year, are developing part-time policies. Compared with private industry, however, higher education is behind the curve in allowing part-time work, and even on campuses where the option is available, few professors have taken universities up on the offer.
