AbstractA recent study of middle managers in English further education (FE) colleges explored the concept of professionalism as displayed by the various types of manager in the study. The study tracked the shifting patterns of professional identity in the sector. Within any one college, individual managers may hold differing constructs of professionalism; however, the effective function of the organisation depends upon mutual understanding which enables middle managers to value each other's professional identity and work successfully together. To offer a comparative perspective upon this research, in 2005 a single case study was carried out in an institute of technical and further education (TAFE) in Australia. As the concept of the "VET (vocational education and training) professional" has been under debate for some time, this case study provided a location for testing some of the outcomes of the English research against the Australian context. As data collection progressed, it became apparent that the management structure at the TAFE might be having a particularly beneficial effect upon the middle manager role, and this effect was analysed in the data. At the end of the week, preliminary findings were reported at a "round table discussion" to which there was an open invitation to staff. (ERIC).
