Abstract | In this article, the author relates her and her husband's dilemma in letting their child Hannah live in a residential home. Hannah has electrical status epilecticus during sleep (ESES), or Tassinaris syndrome, a seizure disorder that emerges in the mid- to late-toddler years. Individuals with Tassinaris syndrome often display the sudden onset of autistic-like characteristics, followed by diminished motor-function and language skills with the onset of night seizures. Initially, the author and her husband never addressed the issue of alternative living options for Hannah once she reached adulthood. But in 2002, her husband experienced severe complications after surgery. Caring for Hannah at home became too difficult for them. As such, they decided to let Hannah live in a residential home. The author relates that, although it will be difficult for them when Hannah eventually goes to a residential home, their loss will be Hannah's gain, as she will be in a community of her peers, be able to participate in activities and outings, and form bonds with others.
