Abstract | When the author first used "VisiCalc," the author thought it a very useful tool when he had the formulas. But how could he design a spreadsheet if there was no known formula for the quantities he was trying to predict? A few months later, the author relates he learned to use multiple linear regression software and suddenly it all clicked into place: all he needed was a data sample and the regression software would give him a formula and some idea of the limits of accuracy. Spreadsheets and regression both existed long before computers, but they became much more powerful tools in their computer form. In this article, the author presents an activity that will help students learn to use a multiple linear regression software. A brief story of Sir Francis Galston's discovery of regression analysis is also presented. (Contains 7 figures.) (ERIC). |
