| Abstract | As a nurse who has worked at several campus health centers, including, before last spring's shootings, the health center at Virginia Tech, the author knows that more students than ever have diagnosed mental illness and take psychiatric medications. Very few pose any threat to themselves or others. Only in extremely rare cases does mental illness lead to violence--and, of course, violence is not always a product of mental illness. Stress can exacerbate the symptoms of mental illness, however. Because one may work directly with students during a stressful period in their lives, it is important to recognize signs of potential violence in troubled students and to be aware of the resources the campus offers for students who need help. In this article, the author describes some warning signs of mental illness and explains when to refer a student for help. (ERIC). |
