Abstract | Educators often talk about the need for relevant and representative curriculum for students of color, the need to recruit more educators of color, and the reality of white privilege. The author relates that at his school, they hold "courageous conversations" among staff and a diverse group of families to nurture a dialogue that breaks through the boundaries of race. However, they rarely discuss the concerns involved in white educators disciplining students of color. As a white educator, the author is aware that each student's race is an important part of his or her identity. In this article, the author provides ideas on how white educators can address color-blind thinking and the reality of white privilege in order to work effectively with students of color. (ERIC). |
