AbstractThe proposal project stretches over a significant portion of the semester-long sophomore course Professional Communication (ENG 250) at Monroe Community College. While developing their proposal project, students need to use time management skills to successfully complete a quality project on time. In addition, excellent oral and written communication skills ensure the proposal's successful development and completion. During the semester students learn information on a variety of topics that is important to completing this project successfully. The proposal project differs from conventional approaches because students can: (1) choose their own teams; (2) determine their own governing rules; (3) decide if "You're fired!"; (4) come up with their own proposal topics; (5) write the RSFP letter; (6) submit a progress report; (7) write the proposal; and (8) deliver the presentation. Students have enjoyed this project a great deal over the years. The ideas that students have come up with have been innovative and intellectual. In fact, Monroe Community College has benefited from several of the ideas students have proposed. As a rule, because students have such autonomy over the proposal project, they are intellectually invested in it and want to ensure its success, whether that is by a good grade or a successful implementation (or both!).
