Abstract | With the release of each edition of Education at a Glance, the Office for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) prepares a press briefing to be used for the international press release and which individual countries in preparing their national press releases can also use. Similarly, the European Union prepares a summary, not for use at the international and national press release, of Key Data on Education in Europe. Since 1997, after the publication of each edition of Education at a Glance, the OECD division on media relations, public affairs and communications collects the related press clippings about this from the member countries, and compiles a press book. In this article, the authors examine the attention that international indicators receive in the press, i.e. OECD's booklets with press clippings. First, it pays attention to the countries included in the press books. Then it examines in more detail the press clippings of six out of the seven countries involved in the BEQUAD project. Two of the five indicators that received most publicity in the press clippings of the BEQUAD countries are considered more closely. In a separate paragraph, attention is paid on the impact of OECD indicators on the Italian Press. In Italy, where there is a lack of national reports based on international indicators, and other experienced partners for the exchange of views have left the scene, the press is of prime importance in the way information from international indicators is selected and interpreted. The article ends with some remarks concerning the most recurrent topics referred to in indicators, the quality perspectives distinguished by Jaap Scheerens. (Contains 3 tables and 3 footnotes.)
