Abstract | A student or an athlete bleeding does not mean that the teacher or coach is necessarily bad or irresponsible. Most have had students (probably from dry heat in the winter) who develop a nosebleed for no apparent reason. Obviously there are also physical activities and sports with a higher chance of physical contact, and thus potential for bleeding. The bottom line is that blood and body fluid spills can happen, do happen, and usually when least expected. Teachers and coaches have an obligation to be professional in the disposition of their duties, including properly handling body fluid spills in the work environment. This article discusses the Universal Precautions (UP) which are standard safety practices developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that should be followed to minimize risk from blood and body fluids, even if there is little apparent risk.
