| Abstract | Each time the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development announces that America's students are falling behind those of other countries, and with every business section article on America's trade deficit with China, America sees a new commission to reinforce the negatives and urge dramatic upgrading of the workforce. This author states that, in an international economy running on instantaneous transactions, America need not worry that the rest of the world is learning more; all societies benefit from a broader distribution of knowledge. In this global economy, however, the smart money is on cooperation, not nationalistic competition. In this article, the author proposes that, in that spirit, America should look beyond its borders and sit down with its international colleagues to observe the changed nature of technical work, and point to some variations in the way it might conduct its business. There is a lot of potential mutual learning in this: Other nations have learned from America; America can learn from them; and they can all learn together. (ERIC). |
