Abstract | The pressures on community colleges have mounted for years; they must balance: competition from the growing for-profit-education industry, demands from lawmakers for more accountability, and the shifting needs of an increasingly complex student body. Most recently, intense financial pressure has been added to the mix as states once again face billion-dollar deficits. Those strains were the main topic as hundreds of community-college leaders met for the annual meeting of the American Association of Community Colleges. The conversation centered not so much on the woes themselves but on what to do about them. Examples included upping the ante on recruiting to make up for budget shortfalls, improving service and community ties to compete with for-profit colleges, and collecting better data to show how two-year colleges are fulfilling their missions.
