| Abstract | In the project described in this article, sixth-grade students use printmaking processes to design an art image of themselves accompanied by a reflective poem. The lesson begins with a discussion of self-portraits by famous artists, inviting questions such as "What visual clues does the artist present to the viewer?" and "How has the artist placed himself/herself within the image?" In the first step of the printmaking process, students draw a diagram of facial proportions in order to give them a sense of space and placement of facial details. Students are instructed to include visual clues about themselves that will represent what they want the viewer to know about them. This drawing will later be transferred to a Styrofoam board that is used for the printing plate. Students are then asked to compose a poem to accompany their image. This project addresses the national standard that requires students to intentionally take advantage of the qualities and characteristics of art media, techniques, and processes to enhance communication of their experiences and ideas.
