Abstract	Demonstrating an appreciation for the perspectives of others is now recognized as one of the single most important learning outcomes of a college education. This skill, fundamental to democracy and civic engagement, is honed in college by institutions that provide opportunities for students to interact with their peers and others on issues that lend themselves to examination through a variety of lenses. Media resources provided by the National Issues Forum (NIF) offer college students the chance to participate in an organized deliberation on such issues as America's role abroad, access to health care, abortion rights, education reform, and environmental policy. College students can act on their passions and views by joining organizations that reflect their perspectives, taking courses with like-minded professors, or attending campus lectures that address issues of interest to them. NIF materials move students into a zone that may be somewhat uncomfortable, in which they engage with people who may hold vastly different views from their own. The NIF is a nonpartisan organization funded by the Kettering Foundation that prepares and sponsors public forums in which current issues are deliberated. According to the organization's Web site (http://www.nifi.org), these discussions offer citizens the chance to hold organized conversations on difficult issues, with the intent of creating an "informed body of citizens working towards common ground for action." These forums allow college students to witness democracy in action as well as allow them to play an active role in that process. (ERIC).
