AbstractAt the end of the day, most of those in higher education feel gratified for having accomplished meaningful work but somewhat overwhelmed with the pile of work yet to be tackled. Still, they see the need to do more beyond that. Indeed, it is becoming clear that there is a growing need for more contact between educators and students and a need to develop a greater sense of community. They see this need, but they also see a conflicting reality: there simply are not enough of them to fill this need. So what can they do? One answer is to enlist the aid of a workforce that is willing to work for cheap or for free, a workforce that can bring a wealth of experience and wisdom to the task of connecting with students. This workforce is recent retirees. Retirees have the ability, but are there enough of them available to make organizing efforts worthwhile? Colleges and universities implement the business practice of early retirement as a way to reduce employee numbers and maintain or increase budget flexibility. Consequently, an increasing talent pool is now available to be put to work in new ways. In this article, the authors propose structuring a system to creatively use these retirees and enlisting the retirees themselves to organize and administer the volunteer program. (Contains 4 notes.)
