AbstractAs the 21st century turns five and a half and looks forward to summer vacation, the higher education community seems poised to undertake an endeavor of epic proportions: the remodeling of the American approach to college student learning. To begin building structures and designing strategies for 21st century education, the "Greater Expectations: A New Vision for Learning as a Nation Goes to College" report recommends that colleges and universities "listen to many voices" (p. 42). In this effort, today's educators are best served by applying contemporary wisdom about student learning and summoning voices that express the founding philosophies of higher education. Ernest Boyer's voice is one of several that educators could summon. Although such voices can no longer speak, they can continue to be an essential part of the dialogue. They are the voices of pioneers who first developed structures and strategies for engaged learning and transformative teaching. In addition to Boyer, these include the voices of John Dewey, Esther Lloyd-Jones, Margaret Ruth Smith, and Nevitt Sanford. If invited to engage in the dialogue about 21st century education, these pioneers, together with today's thinkers, could serve as expert architects and skillful facilitators. In this article, the author envisions the outcomes of such a process. (Contains 18 notes.) (ERIC).
