AbstractThe merger of two successful not-for-profit organizations: Education Extra and the Community Education Development Centre (CEDC) is a defining moment in the afterschool field in the United Kingdom. The momentous occasion offers an opportunity to take stock of the achievements of Education Extra, which for the past ten years has led national developments in what is called "out-of-school-hours learning" or what, in the United States, is called "out-of-school time". In addition, this is a chance to reflect on where educators are in England and in the rest of the United Kingdom in the development of the out-of-school-hours field. It is also a chance to look forward to a new organization called ContinYou, which has a broad and dynamic vision about what constitutes learning beyond the classroom. This article brings together these three key strands and sets them in the context of recent developments in the U.K. afterschool field. The article concludes with a view of the challenges and opportunities facing the United Kingdom in the future and lessons for the American afterschool field.
