Abstract | The transition from the security of a middle level school to a high school isn't easy. The new independence, challenging workload, and high expectations are often enough to send freshmen into a whirlwind. To help offset these challenges, Louisburg (KS) High School developed a freshmen transition program that includes a preview of what high school entails and a well-planned curriculum that gives students the building blocks to be successful, lifelong learners. Preparing for Academic Student Success (Operation PASS) is a program in motion: it has been changing every year since the school began it in fall 2004. The Operation PASS curriculum is taught by teachers who work well with freshmen. They don't necessarily teach freshman academic courses, but they have enthusiasm and the ability to be a "mother hen" as the freshmen develop. (ERIC). |
