AbstractAs accrediting agencies face pressure from Washington to improve the ways the colleges they oversee prepare students, changes at Hocking College are being showcased along with similar adjustments at two other institutions as examples of how accreditors and their colleges can produce better results without government interference. "We talk about ongoing improvement, and that really happens," said Judith S. Eaton, president of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, the nation's main umbrella group of accrediting agencies. The council plans this month to honor Hocking and the other institutions, Kennesaw State University, in Georgia, and Seton Hall University's Stillman School of Business, in New Jersey, with an award for colleges that improve their programs in ways that result in proven gains in student learning. The winning colleges have results to back their assertions that the changes they are making voluntarily have helped them obtain consistently strong outcomes. (ERIC).
