Abstract | The author explores the advantages and disadvantages of integrated curriculum in the middle school setting. She reviews several models for integrated curriculum and guidelines for creating a successful integrated curriculum. A ready-to-use middle school unit on the American Revolution is also presented. Nine complete lessons are provided for teachers to implement in their classrooms. Interactive, hands-on lessons are included for math, science, language arts, religion, art, physical education, music, sociology, and geography. These lessons can be used to turn an ordinary social studies unit on the American Revolution into a cross-curricular experience students will enjoy and remember. The lessons include basic instructions and Internet sites to supplement teaching. The author also presents results from a field test of the integrated unit. (Author). |
