AbstractCollaborative efforts appear to have great potential for increasing effectiveness and efficiency in the fiscally constrained environment of higher education. However, they represent a relatively new organizational arrangement about which we know very little. To better understand this new arrangement, it is helpful to consider the conditions that encourage collaboration within and between institutions. Understanding this emerging form of interinstitutional collaboration requires that we examine the forces that foster its development and facilitate or challenge its implementation. It is also critical to determine the appropriate outcomes, measures of success, and forces that lead to continued collaboration. In order to contribute to the study of collaboration, this chapter describes the development and implementation of a strategic partnership between a community college and a premier engineering university that aimed to improve students' transition from the two-year to the four-year institution.
