Abstract | This chapter examines popular culture as a site of cultural resistance. Specifically, it explores how "culture jamming," a cultural-resistance activity, can be a form of adult education. It examines adult education and learning as it intersects with both consumerism and popular culture. Focus is placed on a growing social movement of individuals who are concerned about consumerism and who are confronting consumption through cultural resistance in and through popular culture. The author concentrates specifically on how these anticonsumption social movements are practicing critical adult education in largely informal realms of learning, through a cultural-resistance strategy called culture jamming. Examples of two such groups are given --- "Adbusters" magazine and Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping --- exploring them as critical sites of adult education and learning. Culture jamming is also discussed as a form of popular pedagogy, as described by Henry Giroux (2004) and Elizabeth Ellsworth (2005). (ERIC). |
