AbstractStandards-based education, including over-packed curricula and high-stakes assessments, is here to stay--at least for the next decade or so. If this approach to teaching and learning is a reality that everyone must deal with, how can everyone leverage what is positive and reduce some of the negative aspects? In this article, the author discusses how the three new R's--responsibility, reflectiveness, and resilience--could be the solution to this dilemma. The author explains that a standards-based world of shared responsibility for student learning is a much better alternative to a punitive accountability system such as the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) program. She also discusses how the country needs educators who are well prepared, have their own internalized goals, and are able to reflect on and modify strategies with colleagues as they work to accomplish shared goals. Lastly, the author explains that in order for the country to develop bright, caring and dedicated people to thrive as teachers and administrators, everyone must help them to develop their individual communal sources of resilience and resourcefulness.
