Abstract | This article describes an activity that incorporates 9 of the 10 National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards. Students explore a stacking garden containing multiple layers. The garden allows students to focus on finding the amount of border material needed and the amount of space available for planting. The problem balances the use of pattern blocks, technology, and middle school mathematical concepts. The study of number and operations, algebra, geometry, and measurement using a stacking garden problem allows students to explore measurement concepts and geometric relationships, calculate perimeters and areas, and discover numerous algebraic patterns that can be formulated into functions. This mathematical garden "grows" the processes of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connections, and representation. (Contains 13 figures.) (ERIC). |
