AbstractAcademics welcome summer with a collective sigh of relief. Finally they can get to those tasks that are nearly impossible to accomplish during a busy academic year: working on that manuscript, completing the revisions on an article, learning the new laboratory technique from the colleague across the hall. However, those going on the job market in the fall would do well to take advantage of the relaxed pace and get some serious work done on their job search. Vick and Furlong suggest: (1) Developing or updating a curriculum vitae (CV); (2) Compiling additional information such as a cover letter, statement of teaching philosophy, research statement, writing sample, or teaching portfolio; (3) Familiarizing oneself with alternative aspects of academe; (4) Seeking out or updating letters of reference, both who and how; and (5) Educating partners, parents, siblings and friends about academic hiring, the work life of academics, and the nature of research. The authors also suggest advice for dual-career couples on a number of issues, including: (1) Whether or not to apply for the same jobs; (2) Ramifications of competing against each other; (3) Differences in hiring cycles; and (4) Potential for jobs on opposite sides of the country. Finally, say the authors, have some fun: try to spend time relaxing, take a break from worrying and take advantage of the season. A happier, refreshed candidate will be more comfortable, and ultimately more successful, in the job market. (ERIC).
