Abstract | The diversity of customs and habitats under which the aboriginal peoples of North America lived in the past--and in which they live today--is one of the many possible topics for consideration in the social studies classroom. Along with an examination of the tribes, social studies educators can teach about the experiences of the explorers and the settlers and about the growth of the U.S. In this article, the author describes how to use lessons on the treaties made with American Indians during each president's administration to raise student awareness of the rich fabric of U.S. history and the ramifications of our country's dealings with native peoples.
