Abstract | A generally-educated individual should have some insight into how decisions are made in the very wide range of fields that employ statistical and probabilistic reasoning. Also, students of introductory probability and statistics are often best motivated by specific applications rather than by theory and mathematical development, because most students take introductory courses on the basis of future utility in subjects outside mathematics. Thus, perhaps the best way to demonstrate the nature and the interest of statistics and probability is to present a blend of statistical rigor with examples drawn from a variety of specialty areas. It can be difficult to find examples for classroom use that span a wide variety of subject matter areas. This paper presents some aspects of probability distributions as they are applied in the real world by biostatisticians. It is hoped that the examples will add to instructor's collections to widen the range of presented applications. (Contains 1 table.) (ERIC). |
