Abstract | Global positioning system (GPS) has many uses. They include navigation, location finding, vehicle tracking, surveying, autonomous control of highway construction equipment, scientific activities, asset location and entertainment. The GPS is a constellation of 24 satellites located in a 10,000-mile radius orbit in a way that allows for at least six satellites "visible" from any location on the Earth's surface. The GPS not only provides 2D location information but also many other pieces of information used in navigation. Altitude (above Earth's sea level) is a value used in aircraft navigation, and adds a 3D component to locations. Ground speed, direction of travel (bearing), distance traveled, and distance to target are other useful values for navigation. In this article, the author describes several GPS projects for technology education at both upper and lower grade levels. These projects include: (1) Operating a GPS receiver; (2) Locating a latitude and longitude; (3) Using GPS with an electronic or paper map; (4) Finding a benchmark; (5) Walking GPS rally; (6) Geocaching and letterboxing; (7) GPS surveying; (8) Half-degree confluence; and (9) Vehicle/personal tracking.
