AbstractEpilepsy, a chronic neurological seizure disorder, affects 2.7 million Americans, half of them children, and worldwide, it is the most common brain disorder. While there is not a cure for epilepsy, the goal of treatment is to achieve the greatest freedom from seizures that can be attained with the minimal amount of side effects. These days everything from medication to diet management to surgery is used in the fight against seizures. One tool in the fight against epilepsy is seizure response dogs. Since its partnership with UCB, Inc., the makers of Keppra, began in 2005, Canine Assistants has been especially busy training seizure response dogs. Located 35 miles north of Atlanta, Georgia in the suburb of Alpharetta, Canine Assistants operates out of a multi-building complex with training rooms and kennel areas. This article discusses the Canine Assistants program and how the program trains seizure response dogs to assist people with epilepsy. (ERIC).
