Abstract | Many school districts are putting data to good use, although much of the data used in administrative decision making ultimately derives from standardized test scores, which raises a host of other related concerns. The author's purpose in this article is not to critique the types or sources of data that administrators use, but to suggest that there is another purpose to which data ought to be used that is too often overlooked, to challenge and upend erroneous conventional wisdom in schools. With the goal of challenging its own conventional wisdom, the administrative team at Blue Hills Regional Technical School in Canton, Massachusetts, put together a multiyear study to see whether a new vocational exploratory program would be efficacious. This article describes how the school administrators used data to challenge and upend their own conventional wisdom. (Contains 2 figures.) (ERIC). |
