AbstractA community school is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. Because community schools are premised on the comprehensive nature of student learning and development, they not only offer rigorous curriculum but also provide additional services, support, and opportunities for children, youth, their families, and communities. Community schools make a difference because they have advantages that traditional schools, acting alone, do not. They mobilize more human and financial resources so principals can manage their schools knowing that students are getting the supports they need to learn. They engage and motivate students by fostering social, emotional, and physical growth as well as academic skills. Community schools take root where principals provide key leadership, advocacy, and support for this comprehensive vision for learning. The effort begins with principals articulating a clear vision of the importance of meeting all students' needs and using that vision to build partnerships. This article features East Hartford High School (Connecticut) and Carson High School (California) whose principals share how building community schools has strengthened their ability to serve their students. These schools have broadened their base of support for students by developing partnerships with universities, hospitals, state departments, city agencies, and other stakeholders. (ERIC).
