AbstractThis article describes the revised summer school program developed by the Anchorage (AK) School District for students who received poor grades in their core classes or low scores in the Alaska Benchmark Examinations or California Achievement Tests. More than 500 middle school students from the district spent five weeks during the summer honing their basic skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and vocabulary. The summer school program was designed to increase achievement, prevent summer loss, and prepare students for the next grade level. The program and curriculum were developed with teacher input during the past three years to provide a fulfilling curriculum that incorporates the latest in research and technology. (ERIC).
