Abstract	This article reports on the authors' application of Freire's ideas as put forward in "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" regarding issues of adult illiteracy and disabled women in Trinidad and Tobago. The author used Freire's concept of the importance of learning the words of the oppressor, of getting people to talk together, of the teacher teaching from where the learners are. In addition, she interpreted Freire's concept to mean that words in themselves can liberate a group of persons who are marginalised or oppressed because the group can write their story and thus tell it to the mainstream of society. Finally, this article will outline how the author envisioned using Freire's ideas with Inuit learners in Canada's north in a creative writing course. (ERIC).
