Abstract | Despite being a relatively new sport in the United States, soccer is incredibly popular among elementary aged children in physical education classes. Unfortunately, because the sport is still emerging, some physical educators lack the experience, content knowledge, and confidence to provide quality, developmentally appropriate lessons. This article provides a practical, six-day soccer unit that elementary teachers can immediately implement in their curriculum. Each day of the unit incorporates a soccer-related instant activity, a skill development task progression, and a developmentally appropriate lead-up game or extended activity. This soccer unit plan is designed for upper elementary students, but can easily be adjusted for either lower or higher grade levels. For an effective unit, try to provide enough equipment (one ball per child) and have extensions for every activity so students are challenged at their own skill level. (Contains 2 figures.) (ERIC). |
