Abstract | Parents and teachers want their children to be safe and to learn the skills they will need to live successful lives in a competitive society. In a diverse and rapidly changing world where people are only an e-mail's blink away from all those strangers everywhere, then it would be safest in the long run to teach young children to "enjoy diversity." In this article, the authors discuss how to teach young children to enjoy diversity. They also present two questions that invite enjoyment of diversity: (1) How to solve this problem?; and (2) How are people different? They suggest that learning to play, to make friends, to negotiate conflicts is the most basic of all learning in the early years, if children are to arrive at "real school" "ready to learn," as the phrase goes.
