Abstract | Faculty salaries and support for professors' staff, equipment, and sabbaticals are among the key cost drivers of any higher-education institution. College administrators are hesitant to confront faculty members, who, as they defend their turf, often charge that cutting costs will damage the quality of education that they provide. At a national summit on college costs that the Lumina Foundation sponsored in 2006, few of the speakers acknowledged faculty expenses for what they are: the 800-pound gorillas of most college budgets. Needed change can occur, however, only if professors are dedicated to meeting the needs of their students in a cost-effective way. Although the seven suggestions offered in this article are unlikely to be fully adopted, they could stimulate incremental steps to slow the rise in college costs and, if carried out in a competent way, also raise quality. Whether or not colleges would pass such savings on to students in the form of lower tuition is another matter. Yet all of these suggestions would reduce the cost of delivering services-- and a few would also help students directly lower their tuition bills. (Author). |
