Abstract | Yoga has much to contribute to singing. The main physical disciplines of yoga are strength, flexibility, alignment, body awareness through breath control, and concentration. These basics also constitute the core of good singing. With instruction incorporated into the regular warm-up, one can introduce beginning yoga ideas into choir practice. Yoga enhances breathing and resonance through postures that help expand the rib cage, strengthen the diaphragm, and firm abdominal muscles. The humming chants practiced in yoga are excellent exercises for tone and resonance. In this article, the author describes how the basic principles of yoga can contribute to breathing and singing warm-up. Using a well-planned warm-up achieves better singing quality while keeping students actively engaged in the music. (Contains 6 resources.) (ERIC). |
